About Houda Ben Younes

Houda Ben Younes is an Architect with a PhD in Architecture. She holds a master’s degree in Architecture, Landscape and Archaeology from the Sapienza University of Rome. She has contributed to the field through her work with ICCROM-Sharjah. Within the framework of the MEDINA initiative, she played a key role in planning activities, including a workshop that focused on integrating traditional knowledge into climate change adaptation and the sustainable development of historical cities in the Arab region. She participated in preparing the nomination dossier for the inscription of the serial property of the island of Djerba in Tunisia on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This complex task involved conducting a comprehensive comparative analysis and organizing workshops dedicated to the preservation and management of Djerba’s architectural heritage. Her postdoctoral work is notable for the publication of several articles and a collection of her own photographs documenting 94 Ibadi mosques on the island of Djerba (Tunisia) and in the Mzab Valley (Algeria). This extensive research was published as part of the ‘North Africa Research Archive’ (NARA). Currently, she is working as an independent consultant on the management and conservation activities of the recently inscribed serial property of Djerba on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
